LAUNCH 2020: ON VIEW AT AIFF FILM CENTER THIS WEEKEND
Since 2011, AIFF has sponsored a film competition just for students called Launch. This competition invites students from all seven surrounding counties (Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine or Klamath Counties in Oregon, and Del Norte and Siskiyou Counties in California), from kindergarteners through college undergrads. Over the years, we have seen an increasingly eclectic collection of submissions from these student filmmakers – this year might be the most diverse collection of genres yet!
If you missed seeing this year’s winning films during AIFF’s online festival, consider stopping by our AIFF Film Center on Main Street to enjoy them through the window, where they’ll be running continuously Friday through Sunday, August 7-9, 10am-8pm as part of the Ashland Summer Celebration Series.
Both of the elementary winners employed a version of stop-motion filmmaking, with a dog, Humphrey, taking his own tour of Main St. in Ashland in a hand-drawn stop-motion film called THE WHIMSICAL ADVENTURES OF HUMPHREY, while the Honorable Mention in that same category employed collage-style of artwork in stop motion for THE SANDCASTLE. Next up is the middle school category, which used a Lego program to spin an elaborate Lego-adventure in space, with Lego characters taking us into the stratosphere in MEANWHILE IN SPACE…
The Launch high school winner is a daring experimental film, a visual immersion (sans any dialogue) that is accompanied by an original piece of electronic music in the film: xikatrbwcsi2tze. And in an entirely different genre, the college winner performed in his own dark live-action comedy called THE DANGERS OF NARRATION. Amid the many finalists, we also had extraordinary documentaries, comedies, and even a live-action Guinea Pig movie.
You can watch the Q&A conducted by Education Coordinator Jana Carole and Jerry Kenefick from the Rotary Club of Ashland Lithia Springs with the winning students here.
