2012 Juried and Audience Award Winners Announced: 11th Annual Ashland Independent Film Festival Concludes April 16th
Ashland, Ore. The Ashland Independent Film Festival tonight announced the 2012 juried and audience award winning films at a gala Awards Celebration at the Historic Ashland Armory. Eleven awards were presented to attending filmmakers, honoring their work screened at the 11th annual festival.
The 2012 AIFF Artistic Achievement Award was presented to Julie Taymor at the Awards Celebration, in recognition of her groundbreaking achievements in independent film, which AIFF Executive Producer, Anne Ashbey Pierotti, likened to “a delicious, and surprising, and deeply satisfying meal that makes you want to stay at the table all night.” In her acceptance speech, Taymor emphasized the importance of the film festival experience in providing venues for live audience-filmmaker interactions. The AIFF presented “Essential Transformation: In Conversation with Julie Taymor,” an on-screen interview conducted by Oregon Shakespeare Artistic Director Bill Rauch, and featured sold out screenings of Taymor’s films “Across the Universe” and “The Tempest.”
The 2012 Rogue Award was presented to AIFF alum Ondi Timoner (DIG!, 2005; Library of Dust, 2011). Timoner was interviewed and showed clips of her work in “Breaking Boundaries: A Conversation with Ondi Timoner,” and her film “We Live in Public” screened at the festival. The director also moderated a filmmaker TALKback panel which will be featured in a future episode of her weekly web series BYOD (Bring Your Own Doc).
The Rogue Creamery Audience Award for Best Documentary was awarded to Rory Kennedy’s “Ethel.” Jonathan Lisecki’s “Gayby”, won the John C. Schweiger Audience Award for Best Feature. Leslie Iwerks’ “Pipe Dreams” received the Audience Award for Best Short Film: Documentary and Drew Christie’s “Song of the Spindle” took home the Audience Award for Best Short Film: Narrative. The Audience Family Choice Award went to “…”
Musa Syeed’s “Valley of Saints” was awarded for Best Narrative Feature film by the festival’s jury. Turner Ross and Bill Ross’ “Tchoupitoulas” took home the Best Feature Length Documentary juried award. Peter Nicks’ “The Waiting Room” was given a special mention by the Feature Length Documentary.
Nicholas Ozeki’s “Mamitas” won the Gerald Hirschfeld A.S.C. Award Award for Best Cinematography. Hirschfeld was the 2007 A.S.C President’s Award Honoree and Director Photography for films such as Young Frankenstein and My Favorite Year and presented the award. The Best Acting Ensemble award went to “Gayby.” “My Best Day” received a special jury mention for Acting Ensemble.
Kangmin Kim’s “38-39° C” won the Best Animated Short. Best Short Documentary went to Sam Green’s “The Universal Language.” The juried award for Best Short Film went to Levi Abrino for “Little Horses.” Matt Bockelman’s “You Have the Right to an Attorney” received a special jury mention for Short Documentary, and Nick Hartano and Sam Roden’s “The Lonely Pair” earned a special jury mention for Short Film.
Many of the films will receive encore presentations Monday at the Varsity Theatre. Tickets are available at the box office at the Varsity Theatre from 9 am to 10 pm. 2012 AIFF tickets are no longer available online. For more information and to read complete film synopses visit ashlandfilm.org.

She joined the staff in October 2011 after serving on its board of directors for five years, including two as board president. Pierotti holds a BFA in Documentary Film Production from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and spent much of her professional career as an online marketing executive. She lives in Ashland with her husband and two children.
